Where the Sea Shows the Way

In the port of San Sebastián, between the Maritime Museum and the Aquarium, there is a place that is impossible to miss. The aroma of freshly grilled fish drifts through the harbor, naturally guiding visitors to the spacious terrace of La Rampa. The restaurant’s name is deeply connected to its location. A rampa is the slipway leading down to the water, once used to unload fishing boats and bring the day’s catch ashore. It is a fitting name for a restaurant that stands right where the sea meets the land, at the heart of the city’s maritime life. La Rampa’s story began in 1945, when Francisca Egurren, known locally as Panchica, sold freshly landed fish directly from the quay and grilled it on the spot. What started as a simple harbor stall soon became a favorite gathering place for locals. In 1996, her grandson Javier Irarregi transformed an old repair workshop on Pier 26 into the restaurant La Rampa. Surrounded by the history of the port, the restaurant developed its unique character while preserving the spirit of its origins. Fish is the undisputed star here. Every day, the menu is built around the freshest catch available: turbot and besugo sea bream, two classics of northern Spanish cuisine, alongside sole, hake, tuna, monkfish, squid, and a wide variety of seafood. The cooking follows the Basque tradition—simple, authentic, and focused on one essential principle: exceptional ingredients need little embellishment. One of La Rampa’s greatest strengths is its remarkable selection of fresh fish, arguably the largest in San Sebastián. While many restaurants feature fish on their menus, few can offer such variety every single day. Here, the fish you see is the fish that arrived from the morning’s catch. In addition to its large outdoor terrace overlooking the port, La Rampa offers a spacious indoor dining room. It is also the only restaurant in the harbor that remains open year-round. For nearly three decades, the kitchen has been led by chefs Igor and Lourdes, who have been part of La Rampa since its opening, ensuring consistent quality and the warm family atmosphere that keeps guests coming back. La Rampa is not a place you need to search for. It finds you on your way — and stays with you long after you leave.
