Christmas decorations

  • Puente de María Cristina San Sebastián, PV Spain (map)

Three weeks before Christmas, San Sebastian turns into a farytale city. Christmas lights are lit on the streets and squares, holiday decorations are set on the seafront and suspended over Urumea river, Christmas market show up on the riverfront and multiple Christmas trees light up on city squares.  A huge glowing sphere in the form of a Christmas ball appear near the sea. It seems to enfold a sculpture of Don Quixote and Sancho Panso located in front of the town hall. This decoration was designed for San Sebastian by students of engineering and architectural departments of the University of the Basque Country. Their work won the first place in the competition to beautify the city.
A huge luminous Christmas tree rests like a queen on the slope of Miramar Palace and can be seen from any place at the La Concha and Ondarreta promenades. Above Urumea river between Santa Catalina and Maria Cristina bridges luminescent cubes in shape of Christmas gifts seem to float in the air creating a magical holiday atmosphere.
City center becomes a perfect place-to-be for the whole family. While parents shop for souvenirs at the Christmas market that brings out crafts from all regions of Basque Country, children could ride the winter slide, which works even without snow (!!!), or look at the city skyline from the observation wheel.
